Chicago – Sidley Austin LLP is pleased to announce that David H. Hoffman
has joined the firm as a partner in the litigation group. He will be resident in the firm’s Chicago office.
Mr. Hoffman is the former Inspector General for the City of Chicago, an independent, anti-corruption post he held for four years. He also previously served for seven years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Chicago. Last year he ran for the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by Barack Obama and placed second in the five-candidate Democratic primary in February 2010. He currently serves as a Lecturer in Law at the University of Chicago Law School.
Mr. Hoffman clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist and for Judge Dennis G. Jacobs of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He also worked for Senator David L. Boren (D-OK) as press secretary and legislative assistant. He graduated from the University of Chicago Law School with High Honors and was an Articles Editor of the Law Review, after graduating from Yale University, cum laude
, with a B.A. in History.

Mr. Hoffman’s practice will consist primarily of civil and appellate litigation with a focus on complex commercial and financial litigation, corporate counseling and internal investigations.

As Chicago’s inspector general, Mr. Hoffman directed all operations of a 60-employee office that conducted criminal investigations, administrative investigations and audits. He instituted reforms to transform the office into a truly independent entity within city government and directed investigations relating to matters such as bribery, fraud and theft schemes, corruption in obtaining city contracts, illegal and discriminatory hiring practices and ethic violations. In 2009, he also served on the Illinois Reform Commission, a body appointed by the governor to recommend anti-corruption reforms for Illinois.
During his seven year tenure as Assistant U.S. Attorney in Chicago, Mr. Hoffman handled all aspects of prosecutions, including more than a dozen jury trials, as well as numerous oral arguments and appellate briefs in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. He investigated and prosecuted every type of federal crime, including health care fraud, bank fraud, tax fraud, fraud and false claims against the government and money laundering cases. He was a deputy chief in the office’s Narcotics and Gangs Section, led the office’s anti-gun-violence program and was a recipient of the Justice Department’s Director’s Award. He served under former United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois and current Sidley partner, Scott Lassar, and under Patrick Fitzgerald, the current U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.
