Sidley Austin LLP an Inaugural Sponsor of PALS® Summer Fellowship Program

LatinoJustice PRLDEF to Benefit from Sidley Austin Sponsorship

New York – Sidley Austin LLP has teamed up with Practicing Attorneys for Law Students, Inc. (PALS®) as an inaugural sponsor of its new Summer Fellowship Program. This program is being launched to provide a number of opportunities for law school students of color to work for the following distinguished civil rights organizations: Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., and LatinoJustice PRLDEF (formerly the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund). Sidley’s sponsorship will provide financial support for the PALS fellow working with LatinoJustice during the summer of 2013.

Through the PALS Summer Fellowship Program, law students of color can apply for fellowships that will expose them to a career in civil rights. This program creates an opportunity for a paid summer position for law students exploring a career in civil rights and give back to their communities.

“Without support from firms like Sidley, law students with an interest in a civil rights career might not be in a financial position to explore this field,” said María D. Meléndez, Sidley Partner and a member of the Board of Directors of LatinoJustice PRLDEF. “I am proud that Sidley supports creative and important initiatives like PALS Summer Fellowship Program and is committed to helping make this possible.”

Participation as a sponsor of the PALS Summer Fellowship Program is an extension of the Firm’s strong commitment to PALS, which also includes serving the organization as a Diversity Trailblazer sponsor, its highest level of sponsorship, supporting and encouraging Firm associate Christian Elloie to serve as a member of the PALS Board of Directors, and actively participating in the PALS mentoring program.

“Sidley has always been a pioneer in creating opportunities for lawyers from different backgrounds,“ said Sally L. Olson, the Firm’s Chief Diversity Officer. “Through programs like our award-winning Sidley Prelaw Scholars Initiative, the Firm helps economically disadvantaged minority college students prepare for the LSAT and apply to law school. When PALS approached us with the opportunity to partner with its Summer Fellowship Program, we saw an immediate synergy between that project and the Firm’s deep commitment to achieving greater diversity for the legal profession as a whole. It is a privilege to support PALS in making civil rights career opportunities available to a broad group of minority law students.”
