Three Sidley Partners Named as Law360 2011 MVPs
New York – Sidley Austin LLP is pleased to announce that three Sidley partners, Douglas R. Hart, Peter Keisler and Carter Phillips, have been named as Law360 2011 MVPs in their respective practice areas. Law360’s MVP awards honor lawyers whose accomplishments in major litigation or transactions have “raised the bar” in corporate law this year.
Two employer victories in wage-and-hour class actions, including a long-running Fair Labor Standards Act suit ultimately decided in his client’s favor by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, earned Mr. Hart, a partner in the firm’s Los Angeles office, a spot on Law360’s list of Employment MVPs. Mr. Hart handles nationwide class action litigation venued across the country and is national class action counsel for several of the Fortune 100. Mr. Hart has been highly successful in defending some of the largest class action lawsuits filed against employers both in California and across the nation, with several of the cases being dismissed outright. He handles all types of employment related class action lawsuits on behalf of employers, including pay practice and wage hour cases, disparate impact and intentional discrimination cases and pension plan cases.
Mr. Keisler, a partner in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office, a global coordinator of Sidley’s appellate practice and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee, was recognized as an Energy MVP for securing victories for utilities clients in a landmark global warming lawsuit before the U.S. Supreme Court, AEP v. Connecticut, as well as in a closely watched environmental enforcement case. Prior to rejoining Sidley, Mr. Keisler served as the Acting Attorney General of the United States. In that capacity, Mr. Keisler served as the chief law enforcement officer of the country and directed the work of the Department of Justice, including its investigative agencies and litigating divisions.
Mr. Phillips, Managing Partner of the firm’s Washington, D.C. office and a member of the firm’s Management Committee, was recognized as an Appellate MVP for presenting more oral arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court than any other current private practitioner, showing no signs of slowing down in 2011 and taking home two high court wins in General Dynamics Corp. v. United States and CSX Transportation, Inc. v. Alabama Department of Revenue. Mr. Phillips has argued 73 cases in the Supreme Court. Mr. Phillips also has argued 90 cases in the federal courts of appeals. Mr. Phillips argued five cases in October Term 2010, and in October Term 2011, he has argued two cases already and will argue at least two more in the first three months of 2012.
“Doug, Peter and Carter each had impressive successes this past year in some of the most closely watched and significant cases of 2011,” said Thomas A. Cole, chair of the firm’s Executive Committee. “I am pleased to congratulate Doug, Peter and Carter on this honor.”
