Sidley’s largest office traces its origins back to 1866. For over 145 years, the firm has grown with the city, and remains one of the largest and most respected law offices in Chicago. More than 530 lawyers in the Chicago office work on a broad range of litigation, transactional and regulatory matters.

Lawyers in our Chicago litigation practice have trial and appellate experience in virtually all areas of litigation, including antitrust, bankruptcy, class action litigation, commercial contract, commodities, construction, white collar criminal, corporate takeovers, directors' and officers’ liability, distributor, employment, environmental, government contracts, immigration, insurance coverage, intellectual property, lender liability, products liability, real estate, regulated industries, securities and tax. Our Chicago-based securities litigation lawyers have broad experience in litigation arising out of the securities laws as part of one of the largest, most successful and well-known litigation practices in the country. Our nationally recognized products liability litigators have extensive experience in pharmaceutical and medical device, toxic tort, mass disaster and consumer fraud litigation. The office also has a significant litigation practice relating to professional liability claims against accountants and attorneys. Our ERISA practice has defended trustees, administrators, broker-dealers and other clients against ERISA claims in federal trial, bankruptcy and appellate courts throughout the country, including the United States Supreme Court. Several members of the Chicago office are Fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers.

Lawyers in a number of practice groups handle matters that transcend the boundary between litigation and counseling. Lawyers in the office’s antitrust/competition practice counsel clients in a variety of industries on antitrust and consumer protection law issues and represent both plaintiffs and defendants in antitrust litigation. Our bankruptcy/corporate reorganization practice extends to every aspect of this area of the law, including court-supervised proceedings and out-of-court restructurings and workouts. The Chicago healthcare practice offers a full array of legal services, from counseling our clients on enforcement, compliance and regulatory issues to handling complex litigation to structuring and financing transactions. Our intellectual property lawyers provide a full range of litigation, counseling, dispute resolution and licensing in all fields of intellectual property. The office has a large group engaged in a nationwide environmental practice. Our insurance practice, predominantly based in Chicago, provides multi-disciplinary legal services to our clients by bringing together the skills of lawyers concentrating on capital markets, corporate finance, derivatives, insolvency, regulatory and securitization, as well as reinsurance arbitration. Additional highlights of the regulatory practice include representation of life sciences companies, utilities, telecoms and banking and financial institutions.

Chicago corporate lawyers advise clients on all aspects of mergers and acquisitions, issuer and third-party tender offers, proxy contests, leveraged buyouts, corporate restructurings, divestitures, spin-offs and split-offs and joint ventures. Our corporate lawyers advise on initial public offerings and other securities offerings and counsel on corporate governance, financing duties, disclosure requirements and executive compensation. Our derivatives lawyers represent clients on a broad range of transactional and regulatory matters involving currencies, futures, options, securities, structured products, swaps and other financial products and our securitization and structured finance lawyers possess extensive experience handling a broad array of asset types and financing techniques. The Chicago office’s syndicated and leveraged finance practice provides a full range of sophisticated legal services to the financial services industry. The Chicago real estate practice represents owners, developers, lenders and other financial intermediaries in a wide range of transactions involving the development, financing, sale, acquisition and leasing of real estate.

Primarily based in the Chicago office, our employee benefits practice is one of the largest practices of its kind in the United States, and lawyers in our Chicago-based immigration practice develop comprehensive and cost-effective strategies to address the unique immigration needs of each client. The office’s trusts, estates and not-for-profits group has built a practice with a reputation for excellence through a century of advising a wide range of clients on a diversity of legal matters. Our Chicago tax lawyers work closely with our clients and with lawyers in the firm's other practice groups to develop timely, cost-effective tax strategies and to identify and solve potential tax-related problems.

Our Chicago office has committed substantial resources to the community and a variety of pro bono activities. In addition to an extensive commitment to death penalty and asylum cases, we were principal outside counsel to the Chicago 2016 Exploratory Committee, the not-for-profit entity established to represent the City of Chicago in its bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

For over 25 years, Sidley has been involved with Kanoon Elementary School as part of an educational partnership with Chicago Public Schools' adopt-a-school program. Sidley also performed all the legal work pro bono for Gay Games VII, a sports and cultural festival held in Chicago in July 2006. Chicago lawyers serve on the boards of numerous universities, hospitals, museums and other civic and charitable organizations.

In November 2005, Sidley’s Chicago office proudly moved to One South Dearborn as the principal tenant of Illinois’s first LEED-CS (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Core and Shell Development) Silver Certified Green Building. The office sits in the heart of Chicago’s “Loop” business district nestled among some of the first modern skyscrapers and only blocks from the Chicago River, Millennium Park and shores of beautiful Lake Michigan.
