ALYCIA A. DEGEN is a partner in the Litigation, Products Liability, and Appellate Practice groups. Her practice includes complex civil and appellate litigation, with significant focus on product liability and mass tort litigation, as well as defense of pharmaceutical and other companies in consumer fraud and unfair competition class actions in federal and state courts.

Ms. Degen has significant experience in federal preemption, class actions and multi-plaintiff cases, multidistrict litigation and coordination, and the defense of product liability and consumer fraud cases. Her recent class action experience includes defense of pharmaceutical, consumer products, and financial services companies in class actions raising allegations of fraud, unfair business practices, breach of contract, violation of California Business and Professions Code sections 17200 and 17500, and violation of the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act, as well as in related government investigations.

She recently participated in the briefing of the following appeals:

  • Depriest v. AstraZeneca Pharms. L.P., --- S.W.3d ----, 2009 Ark. 547, 2009 WL 3681868 (Ark. Nov. 5, 2009)
  • Prohias v. AstraZeneca Pharms. L.P., 958 So. 2d 1054 (Fla. Dist. Ct. App. 2007), review denied, 969 So. 2d 1014 (Fla. 2007)
  • Granholm v. Heald, 544 U.S. 460 (2005) (amicus brief)

Ms. Degen is also a contributing author to Federal Appellate Practice: Ninth Circuit (2d ed., Lawyers Cooperative publishing, 1994 & 2001 supp.) and to the “Appellate Practitioner” column in the Los Angeles Daily Journal. In 2005, she was honored with the ACLU Foundation of Southern California’s Criminal Justice Award.

Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Degen served as law clerk to the Honorable Cynthia Holcomb Hall, United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, Pasadena, California, and as judicial extern to the Honorable William D. Keller, United States District Court, Los Angeles, California.
