Established in 1980, Sidley’s Los Angeles office has approximately 160 lawyers, making it the eighth largest law office in Los Angeles County. Our lawyers regularly handle matters of substance for Fortune 500 corporations, government agencies, entrepreneurial businesses and associations with significant numbers of local, national and global clients. Our local practice groups - corporate and finance, employment and labor, environmental, intellectual property and technology, insolvency, litigation, real estate and taxation - work closely with one another as well as with our other U.S. and overseas offices to ensure that our clients’ expectations are not only met but exceeded.
The Los Angeles office has extensive experience in the specific issues that face companies doing business in California. Our lawyers have successfully litigated many cases relating to SEC enforcement actions, statutory and common law claims of unfair business practices, misleading advertising and unfair competition brought under California Business and Professions Codes § 17200 and § 17500 and under the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act. Lawyers in the Los Angeles entertainment and media law practice annually write the California chapter in the Libel Defense Resource Center’s 50-State Survey of Media Privacy and Related Law, an important resource for lawyers defending media companies.
Our litigation lawyers handle all forms of civil and business-oriented white collar litigation in federal and state courts throughout California and across the country. Los Angeles litigation lawyers, several of whom formerly worked for the SEC and the U.S. Attorney in Los Angeles, are also an integral component of the firmwide SEC enforcement, antitrust/competition, accountants liability and securities practices. In addition, we have extensive experience in arbitration, mediation and all other forms of alternative dispute resolution. The experience of the Los Angeles appellate group, part of the firmwide appellate practice, is witnessed in state and federal appellate courts throughout the country. Additionally, lawyers from the Los Angeles office coauthored one of the leading treatises on Ninth Circuit practice, Federal Appellate Practice Guide: Ninth Circuit (Lawyers Cooperative, 1999).
Sidley has a U.S. and international practice in bankruptcy, corporate reorganization and related areas. The group’s lawyers on the West Coast are involved in both court-supervised reorganization proceedings and out-of-court restructurings throughout the nation and in the United Kingdom.
An integrated part of one of the firm’s largest practices, the Los Angeles corporate and finance group practices in the areas of private equity and hedge funds, securities offerings, project and debt financings (corporate and governmental), securitization transactions, complex investments, joint venture arrangements, corporate restructurings, IP and commercial transactions and cross-border business transactions. In addition, the group provides a broad range of legal counseling to senior management and boards of directors of regional, national and international clients. A unique focus of our practice is the scope of our involvement in private M&A transactions. Our California offices have handled in excess of $1 billion in private equity deals in the past five years, and in excess of $12 billion in transactions and new offerings for our hedge funds clients.
Our Los Angeles real estate lawyers are involved in some of the most creative and sophisticated transactions and counsel lenders, developers, builders, investors, owners and tenants in transactions which may involve anywhere from several million dollars to in excess of one billion dollars.
Los Angeles intellectual property lawyers have a broad range of litigation experience, and provide a complete range of asset development and management, counseling, dispute resolution, licensing and prosecution services in all aspects of intellectual property and technology. Our lawyers have science or engineering degrees, including some with advanced degrees across a broad spectrum of arts. The group’s lawyers are involved in many of the nation’s most significant, high profile patent litigation, including disputes over patents covering plasma TV monitors, electronic check processing systems and high speed computer processors. The group also handles complex patent prosecution applications, and regularly reviews the validity of third party patents in order to assist clients in avoiding unnecessary litigation. This experience gives our clients the benefit of considerable knowledge in areas with increasingly challenging issues concerning intellectual property protection and enforcement, and where the risks of litigation may be more significant.
The Los Angeles employment and labor group regularly litigates single-plaintiff, multiple-plaintiff and class action employment, employment-related and traditional labor claims throughout the United States, and has substantial experience defending wage and hour lawsuits brought on a class or representative basis in California. Lawyers in our Los Angeles-based mass torts litigation group regularly defend pharmaceutical and medical products manufacturers. The Los Angeles environmental group routinely handles matters arising under California law, including Proposition 65.
The Los Angeles office provides a gateway for the firm’s U.S., Asia and Pacific Rim offices. Sidley devotes a substantial portion of its talents and resources in serving the Korea and Japan markets, and has assembled one of the most experienced Korea practice groups among major U.S. or UK-based law firms. The group is comprised of several native Korean speakers with extensive experience in representing Korean businesses.
Located in the Gas Company Tower in downtown Los Angeles, Sidley has rapidly established itself as a law firm that is devoted to the communities it serves. Our local lawyers speak, read and write many languages fluently, including Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, French, Hebrew and Tagalog. We serve as principal counsel to the Los Angeles Music Center, the Long Beach Aquarium and a number of other cultural institutions. We participate in a variety of pro bono and charitable activities including sponsoring public interest law fellowships at UCLA and USC law schools, and serving as an educational partner to Dorsey High School’s Law Magnet Program. Our lawyers also actively serve on boards of numerous public interest and civic organizations.
