Sidley Partner Virginia Seitz Confirmed as Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel

Washington D.C. - Sidley Austin LLP announced today that Virginia Seitz has been confirmed by the Senate to lead the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel.

“Virginia is a dedicated, talented lawyer and a valued member of our firm,” said Carter G. Phillips, managing partner of the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. “The nation will certainly benefit by having Virginia serve in this new role where she will be providing legal advice to the President and executive-branch agencies on major issues. Of course we are terribly sad to lose her.”

Ms. Seitz has been a partner in Sidley’s Washington, D.C. office since 1998. She concentrates in appellate practice in the federal courts of appeals and the United States Supreme Court, focusing on issues of constitutional, labor and administrative law. She is best-known for authoring an amicus brief on behalf of retired military officers in support of affirmative action in the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case Grutter v. Bollinger.

“This is a unique opportunity to serve my country, and I am honored to have been chosen by the President and confirmed by the Senate,” said Ms. Seitz. “I look forward to the important work ahead, but I will miss my colleagues and my practice at the firm.”

Ms. Seitz graduated summa cum laude from Duke University. She was a Rhodes Scholar, obtaining her M.A. Oxon. from Oxford University, and graduated first in her class from Buffalo Law School. She clerked for Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan, Jr., and the Honorable Harry T. Edwards of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
