JOHN M. RAFKIN is a partner in the Real Estate practice in the Chicago office. Mr. Rafkin represents individual lenders, lender groups, agents and borrowers in complex single and multi-asset financings of commercial real estate, including construction and acquisition financing, term, revolver, and letter of credit financing, CMBS and mezzanine financing, and A/B and preferred equity forms of subordinated financing. He has extensive experience financing hotel transactions, as well as office, retail and industrial asset types. Mr. Rafkin has handled the assignment and participation of all of the foregoing forms of financing for large institutional lenders, and has represented both purchasers and sellers of performing and non-performing loans. Recently, his practice has focused on the workout of troubled real estate loans, including complex, multi-tiered loan restructurings, deeds in lieu, bankruptcy and other settlement structures. In addition to his financing practice, Mr. Rafkin represents developers and other owners in connection with the acquisition, development, construction and sale of real estate, as well as landlords, lenders and tenants in connection with retail, office and industrial leasing. Mr. Rafkin is the author of (among other articles) the current chapter on “Leaseholds and Mortgagees” in Commercial and Landlord-Tenant Practice, a publication of the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education.  Mr. Rafkin has been included in the United States edition of The Legal 500 since 2010.
