Senior Counsel Martin Redish to Join Sidley’s Chicago Office in Appellate Practice
Chicago – Sidley Austin LLP announced today that Professor Martin H. Redish has joined the firm as senior counsel resident in the Chicago office and will focus his practice on appellate and general litigation matters. Redish is currently the Louis and Harriet Ancel Professor of Law and Public Policy at Northwestern University School of Law and will remain in that capacity while he is associated with Sidley.
Redish has published extensively in the areas of federal jurisdiction, civil procedure, freedom of expression and constitutional law. He has appeared as an expert witness before numerous congressional committees on such subjects as congressional power to control federal court jurisdiction and the jurisdictional implications of bankruptcy court reform.
“Marty is a respected educator who brings tremendous scholarship to the firm’s appellate practice,” said Carter Phillips, a member of the firm’s Management Committee. “Marty and I wrote an article together 30 years ago. He brings interesting insight and experience to law intensive projects and it is a privilege to welcome him to the firm and to get to collaborate again after all these years.”
Redish is the author or co-author of more than 70 articles and 14 books, was recently included on a list of the 100 most cited legal scholars of all time and was recognized by the Institute for Scientific Information for being among the most highly cited researchers worldwide. Redish has also served as special consultant to the United States Judicial Conference Subcommittee on Judicial Independence, and is frequently a speaker at symposia and conferences held for members of the federal judiciary.
“I am delighted to join a law firm with such a highly respected appellate practice,” said Redish. “I am hopeful that my diverse experiences will add depth to the firm’s practices.”
Redish received his AB with highest honors in political science from the University of Pennsylvania and his JD, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School. He has served as a visiting professor at Stanford, Cornell and the University of Michigan Law Schools. He has also won both the Robert Childress Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence and the Dean’s Teaching Award at Northwestern.
One of the first law firms to have a dedicated appellate group, Sidley’s appellate practice is national in scope, consisting of more than 100 lawyers representing clients before the United States Supreme Court, state supreme courts, federal courts of appeals and other appellate forums. Sidley’s appellate practice has had an especially significant year. Five different lawyers from Sidley’s appellate team argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court in calendar year 2007 and in the 2007-08 term, Sidley’s team was involved with almost 40 percent of the argued cases on the Supreme Court docket, representing either a party or an amicus.
Sidley Austin LLP is one of the world's largest full-service law firms, with more than 1800 lawyers practicing in 16 U.S. and international cities, including Beijing, Brussels, Frankfurt, Geneva, Hong Kong, London, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney and Tokyo. Every year since 2003, Sidley has been named to Legal Business’ Global Elite, its designation for the 18 firms “that define the pinnacle of the legal profession.” BTI, a Boston-based consulting and research firm, has named Sidley to their Client Service Hall of Fame as one of only two law firms to rank in the Client Service Top 10 for seven years in a row, and to the BTI Power Elite as one of only seven law firms demonstrating the best client relationships for the fourth consecutive year.
