Sidley Partner Karen A. Popp Receives a 2010 InsideCounsel Transformative Leadership Award

May 6, 2010

Washington, D.C. – Sidley Austin LLP is pleased to announce that Karen A. Popp, a global coordinator of Sidley’s white collar practice and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee, is the recipient of the Rainmaker Award in InsideCounsel magazine’s First Annual Transformative Leadership Awards. The awards, which will be presented at a gala dinner and reception on May 24 in Chicago, honor women general counsel and law firm partners who have demonstrated a commitment to empowering women in law. Ms. Popp is the sole recipient of the Rainmaker Award, which honors a woman partner at a law firm in the United States with a book of business of $1 million or more, while helping other women in the profession.

In addition to building a successful white collar practice, Ms. Popp has been instrumental in the development of programs at Sidley and the legal community that have contributed to achieving greater diversity in the workplace, including the creation of firm committees focused on furthering opportunities for women and minority lawyers and the Women’s White Collar Defense Group in Washington, D.C. At Sidley, she has helped to greatly expand opportunities for other women, diverse and junior lawyers to work on legal matters, partner with clients, grow the firm’s business and expand client relationships. She has also helped to lead changes within the D.C. office, and firmwide, to provide improved mentoring opportunities and the inclusion of women in firm leadership positions. Ms. Popp collaborates with women lawyers throughout Sidley’s offices, particularly in the white collar area. Ms. Popp has been recognized for her efforts within the firm and the legal community by being named “Star of the Bar” in 2006 by the Women’s Bar Association of Washington, D.C.

“Ms. Popp’s success as a lawyer is a key factor in her ability to transform the legal community,” said Carter Phillips, managing partner of the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. “Her commitment to developing women in leadership roles has clearly benefited Sidley, the firm’s clients and the legal communities in D.C. and elsewhere. It is hard for me to imagine anyone more deserving of this recognition.”

“I am honored to be the first recipient of the Rainmaker Award and to be recognized for my deeply held commitment to expanding opportunities for women and diverse lawyers in the workplace,” said Ms. Popp. “This award is particularly gratifying as it rewards women who have built successful practices while continuing to help other women.”

Ms. Popp has represented Sidley clients in a wide range of matters involving allegations of criminal, civil and ethical wrongdoing. She has been retained to lead confidential worldwide investigations and defend corporations and individuals in governmental investigations related to alleged FCPA and OFAC violations, securities fraud, accounting irregularities, kickbacks, tax fraud, misuse of corporate assets, false claims, antitrust and other bribery, corruption and fraud. Ms. Popp’s clients are from a diverse range of industries, including finance, retail, oil, pharmaceutical, healthcare, communications, technology, insurance, security, charitable groups, transportation, labor and the government. Ms. Popp is a former federal prosecutor in New York, lawyer in the Office of Legal Counsel at the U.S. Department of Justice and Associate White House Counsel to President Clinton. She is also the Hiring Partner for the firm’s D.C. office.

Sidley has a long-standing commitment to recruiting, retaining and promoting women lawyers. Many women lawyers have taken advantage of the firmwide reduced hours policy, which enables lawyers, at both the associate and partner levels, to work a flexible schedule. Women hold key management positions within the firm and a number of women lawyers serve as advisors, board members and officers for professional, volunteer and community organizations. Sidley was named as a 2009 Working Mother & Flex-Time Lawyers Best Law Firm for Women and is one of only 15 law firms that have received this honor every year since the list’s inception, having been named to the list in 2007 and 2008. In 2009 and 2010, Sidley was also recognized by Yale Law Women as one of their “Top Ten Family Friendly Firms,” their list of law firms that are leaders in developing and implementing family friendly policies. In 2005, Sidley became the second law firm to win the Catalyst Award, presented by Catalyst, the leading research and advisory organization dedicated to expanding opportunities for women and business.

Sidley Austin LLP is one of the world’s largest full-service law firms, with approximately 1700 lawyers practicing in 17 U.S. and international cities, including Beijing, Brussels, Frankfurt, Geneva, Hong Kong, London, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney and Tokyo.  Sidley is recognized for service and responsiveness—BTI, a Boston-based research and consulting firm, has named Sidley as one of only two firms to have been in the top ten of the BTI Client Service rankings every year since the inception of those rankings in 2001, and was number one in three of those years.
