SCOTT D. PETERMAN is a partner in the firm’s Hong Kong office and a Gaikokuho Jimu Bengoshi in the firm’s Tokyo office and advises on corporate and commercial transactions with a primary focus on hedge fund formation, private equity transactions, and alternative investments. His private equity clients have included Bain Capital, The Carlyle Group, Madison Dearborn Partners, Olympus Partners, and Warburg Pincus, as well as several large Japanese banks, the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds, and many of Asia’s more prominent asset managers. Mr. Peterman is one of the world’s leading legal authorities on Japanese hedge funds, and one of only a handful of practicing attorneys in the world who holds a designation as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), issued by the CFA Institute.

Mr. Peterman has also advised clients on a broad range of legal matters, including mergers and acquisitions, leveraged buyouts, venture capital and entrepreneurial transactions, corporate finance for telecommunications and high-tech clients, as well as the regulatory issues implicated by these matters. In addition, Mr. Peterman works with the managers of, or principals, in hedge funds, private equity funds and other financial services clients with respect to managing control and succession issues among partners, and implementing multi-generational planning and wealth transfer strategies. He assists clients in formulating and implementing their planning goals for the fund operations and the net worth it creates, which usually includes establishing appropriate structures to protect the management of the operations and maximize the advantage of substantial earning potential to shift growth and appreciation to trusts.

Prior to joining Sidley, Mr. Peterman was Country Manager, China and Korea, for Apple; Director of Asia Pacific for Alcatel Data Network; and Director, Business and Strategic Analysis, North America, for Cable & Wireless. Mr. Peterman was formerly Vice-Chairman of the Board of the CFA Society of Japan.

Mr. Peterman has lived in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tokyo, and London and speaks Mandarin Chinese and Japanese. While in Taiwan, he studied at the Stanford Center for Advanced Chinese Language Studies in Taipei.
