Trusts, Estates and Not-for-Profits


The Trusts, Estates and Not-for-Profits practice at Sidley provides a critical offering to our clients, especially in light of the recent economic climate. The group has 17 lawyers who practice out of Sidley’s Chicago and New York offices.

Our lawyers represent high net worth individuals and families, tax-exempt organizations, banks and trust companies, family offices and private trust companies and other clients in a broad range of substantive areas, including the following:
  • Advising individuals and families with significant inherited wealth, owners (and former owners) of privately held businesses, corporate executives, fund managers, professionals and other high net worth individuals in all facets of estate and tax planning, including sophisticated wealth transfer techniques, business succession planning and philanthropic endeavors;
  • Advising fiduciaries (corporate and individual) with respect to trust and estate administration, including issues of tax compliance and fiduciary duties, and representing them before taxing authorities;
  • Representing national and local public charities and private foundations, including colleges and universities, national relief organizations and large national private foundations in all aspects of their operations;
  • Representing corporate fiduciaries and individuals in trust and estate litigation matters, including Will contests and trust construction and modification suits;
  • Coordination of global estate planning for U.S., foreign and multi-national families, including structuring their U.S. investments for tax and generational planning purposes; and
  • Representation of art collectors (including trusts and estates owning significant art collections) in all manners of acquisition, disposition, gift and tax planning.
