At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission, announced on 27 January 2012 the launch of the European Cloud Partnership and stated that Europe should not only be “cloud friendly” but “cloud active”. On 25 January in Brussels, EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding announced the Proposal for an EU Regulation on Data Protection which will have a very significant impact on cloud computing providers and users, and which includes fines of up to 2% of annual worldwide turnover for violations of the requirements set out in the Regulation. In the meantime, it has been announced that the first tranche of G-Cloud, the UK’s public sector cloud, would be launched in March.
