Washington, D.C. – Sidley Austin LLP is pleased to announce that Nathan Clukey has joined the firm in Washington, D.C. as a partner in its Tax Controversy practice. He was formerly a partner with King & Spalding LLP.
Mr. Clukey focuses on complex domestic and international tax controversy issues, including transfer pricing tax litigation. He regularly assists clients in resolving tax disputes in examination and during administrative appeals with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). He advises companies and individuals regarding government investigations connected with parallel civil and criminal proceedings before the IRS and U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Earlier in his career, Mr. Clukey was a trial lawyer in the DOJ’s Tax Division, where he served as lead counsel in jury and bench trials before federal district courts. He litigated several significant cases for the DOJ, including multiple large tax shelter refund suits and nationwide civil injunction actions, and he was repeatedly recognized for his efforts.
“Through his impressive background working for the government and in the private sector, Nathan has built an excellent reputation in the field of tax controversy and we are delighted to add him to our team,” said Matt Lerner, leader of the firm’s Tax Controversy practice. “Nathan will thrive in our collaborative working culture and his extensive experience with both administrative and judicial tax proceedings puts him in a strong position to provide important counsel to our clients, which is particularly valuable after last year’s major federal tax reform.”
