Sidley was named “Competition & Regulatory Team of the Year” alongside co-winner Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher at the 2018 The Lawyer Awards, in recognition of their work on an abuse of dominance case against Google.
Brussels partner Stephen Kinsella OBE and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher partner David Wood worked with existing clients such as Microsoft and comparison website Foundem to create ‘Initiative For A Competitive Online Marketplace’ (ICOMP) – a network of like-minded entities affected by Google’s exclusionary tactics in its online search results pages. The partners coordinated efforts on behalf of ICOMP to build an abuse of dominance case against Google based on existing precedents and insights they had gained from the many disputes on which they had worked. They demonstrated to the European Commission how existing competition law could be applied to a highly complex and entirely new industry sector. Their efforts culminated in a €2.42 billion fine imposed on Google by the Commission for abuse of dominance. The Sidley team included associate Monika Zdzieborska.
