The Daily Journal named San Francisco partner Mike Bettinger to its 2019 “Top Intellectual Property Lawyers” supplement. The annual supplement recognizes lawyers in California who continue to make a mark in all aspects of Intellectual Property law.
The supplement cited Mike for “bringing the so-called ‘Smartphone Wars’ to the 21st century,” praising his representation of Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., a Chinese telecom equipment and consumer electronics manufacturer. Huawei has been entangled with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. over Huawei’s 4G LTE standard essential patent portfolio. The lawsuit alleges Samsung and its affiliates earned billions of dollars selling standardized products that use Huawei’s technology. A trial date has been set for September following a denial of Samsung’s invalidity challenge.
The Daily Journal also commended him on his representation of ASUS Computer International Inc. in which he has claimed Interdigital Inc. created unfair terms when it set its prices for licenses. Scheduled to go to trial in May, the case has the potential to set a precedent for how a court can be involved in setting standards under so-called FRAND terms.
Mike heads Sidley’s West Coast IP Litigation practice. He is a leading national trial lawyer for patent and intellectual property cases. He has tried 25 cases to verdict, securing notable jury trial wins in federal courts throughout the U.S. for premier technology companies in the telecommunications, computer, software, semiconductor and healthcare industries.
