On November 2, The American Lawyer announced Sidley Partner Carter Phillips as a finalist for the prestigious 2020 Litigator of the Year award. During the past 12 months, Carter has successfully argued seminal cases before the United States Supreme Court and the D.C., Federal, Third, Fourth, Sixth, and Ninth Circuits, including convincing the Sixth Circuit to recognize for the first time a fundamental constitutional right of access to literacy. In his career, Carter has argued 88 cases before the Supreme Court and nearly 150 cases before the federal courts of appeal.
“Carter is one of the most influential and successful Supreme Court and appellate litigators in the country,” said Larry Barden, chair of Sidley’s management committee. “Over the course of his career, he has handled an unprecedented number of complex cases and has a reputation for excellence among clients and colleagues alike. On behalf of our entire firm, I am honored to congratulate him on this recognition and look forward to his continued contributions to the legal profession.”
The Litigator of the Year winner will be announced at the virtual American Lawyer Industry Awards Gala on January 14, 2021. The awards are focused at the national level and honor lawyers and law firms that have excelled in ways that are pushing the legal industry forward.
