ICARUS CHAN focuses his practice on international commercial arbitration, investor-state disputes, and public international law. He has experience both representing companies in arbitrations under the ICC, UNCITRAL, SIAC, and AAA rules, as well as acting as tribunal secretary. Besides arbitration, Icarus has experience in white-collar investigations and U.S. litigation. Prior to joining Sidley, Icarus worked as an assistant legal counsel at the Permanent Court of Arbitration assisting tribunals in investor-state and state-contract arbitrations, conducted in both English and Chinese. He was also an assistant to counsel for a state in a contentious case before the International Court of Justice. Icarus is fluent in Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese) and Japanese.
Experience
- Representative Matters
- Represented a Chinese solar panel manufacturer in an ICC arbitration and a SIAC arbitration in connection with supply agreements of PV modules.
- Representing a U.S. medtech company in connection with an AAA arbitration concerning breach of contract claims relating to a license agreement.
- Conducted compliance investigations (including witness interviews in Japanese) for a global pharmaceutical company.
- Assisted the tribunal in an investor-state arbitration under the UNCITRAL Rules concerning investment in a major Asian country.*
- Assisted counsel for a state in a contentious ICJ case on the application of the Genocide Convention.*
