Christian counsels a wide range of government and corporate clients, assisting them in using the rules agreed under international trade law to address market access or regulatory issues. His practice covers international trade rules on prohibited and actionable subsidies, agriculture, market access issues, the discriminatory treatment affecting goods and services, as well as disciplines on domestic regulations.
Christian counsels clients at all stages of international trade disputes, whether as complainants or respondents, or as third parties. Christian has advised clients in dozens of WTO proceedings before WTO panels and the Appellate Body (both in original and in compliance proceedings), as well as before several WTO arbitrators determining the amount of retaliation rights awarded complainants where compliance is lacking. He regularly presents oral arguments before WTO panels, the Appellate Body and arbitrators.
Christian’s experience includes litigation of many of the largest and most complex disputes that the WTO has decided thus far, as well as the resolution of smaller disputes amenable to rapid resolution of trade frictions. This has given him an in-depth, hands-on knowledge of the WTO’s dispute settlement procedures and practices, and a comprehensive understanding of numerous WTO agreements – including the SCM Agreement, the Agriculture Agreement, the GATT 1994, the SPS and TBT Agreements, and the GATS and TRIPS agreements – as well as regional or bilateral free-trade agreements.
Christian also advises clients on various aspects of the legal and policy implications of Brexit.
In addition, Christian assists clients in identifying and pursuing their interests in the negotiation of new international trade agreements.
Christian has recently been recognized in The Best Lawyers in Switzerland 2022 for Trade Law. He has also been featured as a recommended lawyer in the 2019-2022 editions of Who’s Who Legal: Trade and Customs.
