KOLJA VON BISMARCK co-heads Sidley’s Restructuring group in Europe. He focuses on advising creditors and debtors on financial and operational restructurings as well as restructurings of distressed companies, predominantly in a cross-border context.
Kolja has been involved in almost any major cross-border financial restructuring with a German COMI and is constantly rated and widely considered as one of the leading German practitioners in his area of practice. He has, for example, received acknowledgement as a Leading Individual for Restructuring and Insolvency from numerous industry ranking guides, including Chambers, Best Lawyers in Germany and IFLR 1000. In Chambers Europe 2019 he is ranked in Band 1 for Restructuring/Insolvency (Germany), where sources say “he is an institution in Germany. He is extremely competent and strong in negotiations.” The 2018 edition comments on how he is continuing to “inspire huge respect in the German restructuring market,” and that he impresses with his “in-depth knowledge of the evolving legal landscape,” and “ability to find solutions and understand the dynamics of a deal flow.” According to another source, he is an “outstanding lawyer who is very well connected and highly regarded.” He has also been listed among the “best lawyers” for Restructuring and Insolvency by Handelsblatt Best Lawyers 2020 and has been named a “Thought Leader” in Who’s Who Legal: Thought Leaders 2019 for Restructuring & Insolvency. Kolja was recognized among Germany’s “Top Tier Restructuring Lawyers” by German business magazine WirtschaftsWoche. In the 2019/2020 edition of the JUVE Handbook Kolja was recognized as a Restructuring Thought Leader, with commentators describing him as “an excellent networker and an outstanding negotiator.”
Prior to joining Sidley in 2017, Kolja was a senior partner in the banking practice of another international firm.
