An inaugural ceremony announcing the winners of this year’s Legal Media Group Life Sciences Awards took place on September 25 at Essex House in New York City. Sidley won six awards, including the biggest honor of the evening, “U.S. Life Cycle Firm of the Year,” and partner Scott Bass, co-head of the Global Life Sciences team, was inducted into the LMG Hall of Fame.
Of all the attending firms that evening, Sidley received the most awards, which are as follows: U.S. Life Cycle Firm of the Year; Government Investigation (False Claims Act) Firm of the Year; Government Investigation (International) Firm of the Year; Litigation Firm of the Year; Regulatory Firm of the Year; and Scott Bass – Hall of Fame.
In addition to those honors, the firm was shortlisted in the following categories: Antitrust Firm of the Year; FDA Medical Device Firm of the Year; FDA Pharmaceutical Firm of the Year; Finance & Transactional Firm of the Year; Healthcare Pricing and Reimbursement Firm of the Year; and Merger & Acquisitions Firm of the Year.
LMG Life Sciences hosted this awards ceremony to recognize key law firms, lawyers and the innovative work being accomplished throughout the life sciences industry. The lawyers and law firms honored at the first LMG Life Sciences Awards were “subject to stringent peer review and editorial discretion” and have participated in “case matters that have made headlines with regards to legal precedent and/or other notable factors that have remained at the forefront of conversation in both the United States and Canada,” according to the awards ceremony book.
The awards ceremony came on the heels of the release of the 2013 edition of the LMG Life Sciences publication, a legal guide focused on leading lawyers and firms in the life sciences field. Sidley’s accomplishments didn’t go unnoticed by the guide, which said in its editorial, “The life sciences practice at Sidley Austin is the quintessential model of how a law firm with full-service capabilities should structure their industry group.”
LMG Life Sciences deemed 36 of Sidley’s lawyers as “Life Sciences Stars”—individuals who have been recommended consistently as reputable and effective lawyers serving the industry—more than any other firm in the rankings. The publication recognized 10 of the firm’s practice areas, nine of which received the top ranking of “Highly Recommended.”
Sidley was also one of just eight firms to be named a Life Cycle Firm—“firms with across-the-board capabilities” in at least three designated practice areas, according to the guide. The publication said of Sidley, “Competitors marvel at what the firm has been able to accomplish in the community,” and cited an impressed source who acknowledged, “‘They have built a practice that can compete with any other industry group in the country.’”
Sidley was ranked in the following practice areas: Antitrust; Corporate; FDA – Medical Devices; FDA – Pharmaceutical; General Patent Litigation; Government Enforcement/ Fraud & Abuse; Hatch-Waxman Branded Litigation; Healthcare Pricing & Reimbursement; Mega-Merger and Product Liability.
The following lawyers were named Life Sciences Stars (separated by category): Finance & Transactional—Michael A. Gordon, Joshua T. Hofheimer, Pran Jha, Deborah A. Marshall, Jeffrey S. Rothstein and David J. Zampa; Intellectual Property—Thomas H. Beck, Jeffrey P. Kushan, Jeffrey M. Olson, David T. Pritikin, Thomas D. Rein, M. Patricia Thayer, Vernon M. Winters and Paul J. Zegger; Non-IP Litigation & Enforcement—Scott Bass, Raymond A. Bonner, Michael W. Davis, Michael P. Doss, Kimberly A. Dunne, Maja C. Eaton, Ken Glazer, Sara J. Gourley, Mark E. Haddad, Paul E.
