Sidley was named “Outstanding Firm in Advancing Gender Diversity and Inclusion” at the Chambers Women in Law Awards: USA 2018 ceremony on June 21 in New York City. The award recognizes the firm’s efforts to promote diversity by creating leading gender diversity and inclusion programs.
Sidley’s submission underscored its efforts to retain and promote women into partnership and leadership positions. In 2017, Sidley focused significant resources on the important role that practice group leaders play in women lawyers’ successes. Our Executive Committee Task Force on Retention and Promotion of Women (Task Force) published a resource guide for practice group heads and began holding quarterly videoconferences to discuss how they could better support women at all levels. The Task Force also worked with the firm’s Committee on Retention and Promotion of Women on initiatives to support the promotion of women to partnership and the promotion of partners to significant leadership positions. During the past year, the firm took the historic step of promoting a class of new partners that comprised 53% women firmwide and materially increased representation by women lawyers in firm management.
New York partner Maria Melendez was also short-listed for the individual award, “Minority Female Lawyer of the Year.”
