Sidley successfully represented General Electric Co. (GE) in a multi-defendant case brought by the estate of a U.S. Navy sailor that claimed that his death was caused by exposure to asbestos dust during his service as a machinist aboard a WWII destroyer, the USS Henderson, from 1968 until 1972. On August 14, 2020, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland granted the motion for summary judgment filed by GE on all claims and cross-claims, based on lack of product exposure, as neither the co-worker’s nor plaintiff’s expert testimony was sufficient to establish causation. Tim Kapshandy, John Heller, and Matt Binder from the Chicago office led the Sidley team.
