JENNIFER COPLAN is global co-leader of Sidley’s Technology and IP Transactions practice. Her practice focuses on the development, protection, procurement, licensing and exploitation of intellectual property and technology, including in connection with the establishment of new technology platforms and new business models.
She has deep experience in technology transactions in a broad range of industries, including cloud services, outsourcing, technology services, software, Internet, data analytics, blockchain and other Fintech, financial services, insurance, IT, university R&D, consumer electronics, cable and communications.
A software engineer prior to attending Yale Law School, Jennifer advises clients on technology development and licensing transactions, outsourcing and technology services, cloud and platform transactions, university licensing, software transactions, digital media transactions, open source counseling and the intellectual property aspects of mergers and acquisitions, strategic joint ventures and various other commercial relationships.
Jennifer also has for many years advised clients on digital media-related matters involving the distribution of digital entertainment content. She counsels leading international consumer electronics, technology and motion picture companies in connection with a variety of matters relating to content protection and digital rights management and has had a leading role in several standards organizations and consortia involving the intersection of technology and entertainment content, including efforts relating to content protection for DVDs, Blu-ray discs, home networking technologies, digital television and Internet streaming services.
Jennifer was named a “Recognised Practitioner” – Technology and Outsourcing, New York (2019)” by Chambers USA and one of The Best Lawyers in America (2008–2020) for Technology Law. She is recommended as a leading lawyer in Technology Transactions in The Legal 500 (2015–2017) and recognized in IAM Patent 1000 for Patent Transactions, which described her in 2017 as a “noted authority on digital media and innovation.” She is named an “IP Star” in Managing Intellectual Property – IP Handbook (2014–2017) and recognized by Who’s Who Legal for TMT/Information Technology (2017).
