JOHN P. SIMON is senior counsel in the Chicago office and is a member of the firm’s Tax group. Although trained as a corporate tax lawyer, for more than 25 years John’s practice has primarily involved the tax and other law aspects of various types of partnership investments. John was recognized in the 2016–2021 editions of The Best Lawyers in America in the area of Tax Law.
John is nationally recognized for his extensive experience representing major banks and insurance companies in low-income housing tax credit and historic rehabilitation tax credit transactions. He leads a multidisciplinary Sidley team including lawyers specializing in the real estate, tax, partnership, environmental, bank regulatory and corporate aspects of such transactions.
John serves on a pro bono basis as counsel to the Affordable Housing Investors Council, a non-profit organization the members of which are institutional investors in low-income housing transactions, and is a frequent speaker at various national and regional conferences on low-income housing tax credit transactions.
Beyond tax credit transactions, John has extensive experience representing institutional investors, including family trusts, private foundations, pension plans and others with respect to the tax and partnership aspects of investments in hedge funds and various types of domestic and foreign private equity funds, including buy-out, venture capital, real estate, community development, lending and others.
