MARK HERZOG is pro bono counsel and manages the pro bono practice in several of the firm’s offices, including Washington, D.C. Under Mark’s leadership, the firm was awarded the 2018 D.C. Bar Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year. Previously, Mark was the associate director at the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center where he oversaw legal services to more than 7,000 clients annually. In this role, he designed and implemented new models of delivering pro bono services to address the unmet needs of people living in poverty, working alongside the courts, law firms and other legal service providers. Prior to Joining the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center, Mark was a senior associate in the Criminal Defense Division of the Legal Aid Society of New York, where he handled major felonies at all stages of litigation.
Mark currently serves as a commissioner on the D.C. Access to Justice Commission and on the D.C. Commission on Human Rights. He also is a member of the Board of Directors of the D.C. Bar Foundation and the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Task Force. Mark is co-chair of the Estate Administration Working Group, a joint project of the D.C. Access to Justice Commission and the Council for Court Excellence, which is developing legislative and court recommendations to improve the estate administration process in D.C. He has received numerous awards, including the 2019 Justice Potter Stewart Award presented by the Council for Court Excellence, Jerrold Scoutt Prize, LGBT Bar Association of the District of Columbia Community Service Award and Whitman-Walker Health Outstanding Achievement Award.
