|Beneficiaries||Farmers, rural communities|
Algas Organics was established in 2014 and started operations in 2015 in St. Lucia. They are a small indigenous biotech company that manufacture organic lawn and garden products, from sargassum seaweed, which is one of the raw materials.
Over 100 small holder farmers utilize their products which aid them to improve crop's yield and by extension their incomes. Apart from the tourism sector, rural communities are the next worst hit by Sargassum influxes. Algas Organics has provided employment to over 10 persons in affected rural communities, by engaging them in the collection/removal of seaweed buildups. This serves a dual purpose as it creates employment and solves an environmental problem. As they scale production, they will be focused heavily on "community drying" which is a means of alternative livelihood creation, whereby unemployed members of the affected communities have the opportunity to undertake collection and primary drying of Sargassum seaweed, which Algas Organics will then purchase.
They are planning to expand to USA, Europe, Brazil and other Caribbean Territories.
