Grassland Cameroon

Country   Cameroon

Beneficiaries                      Farmers, rural communities

Project Description

Grassland Cameroon Ltd (Grassland) improves the lives of Cameroonian maize farmers, by providing asset-based credit enabling them to increase their yield and reduce postharvest loss. Their beneficiaries are smallholder farmers, and their clients are local agro-processors such as poultry feed companies, who need large amounts of industrial maize.

Grassland has developed an innovative model to mitigate these challenges. Their model has five main components: (i) financial services, (ii) input distribution, (iii) agro-extension services, (iv) post-harvest & storage services, and (v) marketing services. Grassland tracks and measures impact via (i) cost savings provided to farmers; (ii) increased earnings through higher yields; and (iii) access to training on improved agronomic practices. Through their services farmers can save up to $75 per season on the cost of credit, and earn at least $50 more per season. So far Grassland has worked with 300 farmers in the rural farming community of Babessi, in the North West Region. They estimate that their impact has extended to about 1,800 residents in the community, 60 percent of whom are women. In the future they will extend to other communities within the North West as well as the four other production zones in the country.
