Biography
DEREK KANG advises technology companies on general formation, corporate governance, and private financings and investments. He also has experience working with private equity firms and their portfolio companies in public and private company mergers and acquisitions.
Derek earned his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, where he served as a staff editor for the Michigan Journal of International Law. He received his B.A. in government and legal studies and Asian studies from Bowdoin College.
Prior to joining Sidley, Derek served as a law clerk for the University of Michigan Office of the Vice President and General Counsel. He also participated in Sidley’s summer associate program in 2020.

- Shadowbox Studios in the US$15 million Series A financing of 15 Seconds of Fame (15SOF)
- United Airlines Ventures in its strategic investment of up to US$37.5 million in NEXT Renewable Fuels in connection with a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production facility
- Sound Agriculture Company in its US$75 million Series D equity investment
- Commonwealth Asset Management and Shadowbox in a US$500 million investment into Shadowbox from technology investor Silver Lake
- Confluence Technologies, Inc. in its acquisition of Compliance Solutions Strategies
