The Perennial Foods Group (operating as GreenPath Food) is a specialty food company that produces and sources premium, organic food products through a network of smallholder Partner Farms in southern Ethiopia. Using basic permaculture practices, GreenPath's mission is to create sustainable supply chains for the company and its customers, as well as sustainable farms and livelihoods for thousands of smallholders. GreenPath helps transform subsistence farming communities into small businesses and suppliers to global markets. They provide all inputs, training, credit to farmers in the network, support them to get organic certified, and then buy back all the quality organic product that they grow at fair-trade prices.
In parallel to the livelihood support they offer farmers, their ‘permaculture’ focused agronomic model (that includes multiple types of intercropping) increases biodiversity, improves the resilience of farms, and positively impacts the environment. The diversity of production on farms means that farming families also eat a more diverse, nutritious diet. GreenPath currently works with ~100 smallholder farms, consisting of about 700 individuals. Due to a focus on fruit, vegetable and herb crops, GreenPath primarily engages with the woman in the household, as they typically tend to these types of crops (men usually tend to grain crops). Their activities currently take place in Ethiopia, but they are looking to expand further in East Africa over the next few years.
|Legal Scope||Sidley is providing assistance with various matters including reviewing and advising on terms sheets and ESOP. Sidley is also assisting with i) reviewing and assisting in the negotiations of agreements related to a round of investments involving both debt and equity, and ii) reviewing and drafting contracts between the Company and its suppliers and customers.|
