The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) is the first of its kind in the United States — a comprehensive privacy law that regulates how any and all companies collect and use personal information about their customers and employees. The law entered into force on January 1, 2020, and places a number of new notice and disclosure obligations on companies, and grant consumers extensive new data rights. These obligations will be substantial — in some ways even exceeding those imposed by the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
