Sidley Grows Energy and Infrastructure Capabilities in New York With Partner John Thomas

February 9, 2026
New York – Sidley is pleased to announce that John Thomas has joined the firm’s Energy, Transportation, and Infrastructure practice in Sidley’s office in New York. Mr. Thomas joins from Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, where he was a partner in the Corporate & Financial Services Department and Co-Chair of the Energy & Commodities Practice Group.

Mr. Thomas focuses on physical commodity and commodity derivative trading matters, commodity-linked financing transactions, and commercial transactions involving the purchase, sale, transportation, and storage of commodities across multiple jurisdictions. His transactional experience in the commodities markets includes M&A transactions, intermediation transactions, and secured and structured finance transactions, as well as related corporate governance, regulatory and compliance matters. Mr. Thomas also spent over a decade working for J. Aron & Company, the commodities division of Goldman Sachs, where he was for many years a managing director and lead lawyer for that global business.

“John’s practice is a hybrid of structured finance and M&A transactions in the energy space, which complements our existing capabilities and will allow him to collaborate with other partners on energy and physical commodity transactions,” said Brian Fahrney, chair of Sidley’s Executive Committee. “John‘s client relationships in New York will also help us expand our capabilities in one of the country’s key energy markets.”

“John is a leader in his field and has been involved in a number of innovative transactions,” said Cliff Vrielink, a member of Sidley’s Executive Committee and global leader of the Energy, Transportation and Infrastructure practice. “Many of our partners have worked with John, and we are excited to bring him on to bolster our energy and infrastructure team.”
