KORNEL MAHLSTEIN provides analytical and econometrical assistance to companies, associations and governments on international economic, trade and competition policy issues. Working closely with the firm’s Global Arbitration, Trade and Advocacy and Antitrust/Competition teams, Kornel supports clients by applying economic concepts, principles, models and methods to relevant legal concepts.
Prior to joining the firm, Kornel worked for the Swiss Government at the Economic Policy Department of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). As a member of the short-term macroeconomic analysis group, he was responsible for the estimation and publication of the quarterly GDP figures and the official economic forecasts of the Swiss Government. He also advised the Federal Council and the Chief Economist of the Secretary of Economic Affairs on various economic policy issues, including monetary and fiscal policy, economic stimulus measures and deregulation. Between 2008 and 2009, Kornel was one of the authors of the World Investment Report 2009, one of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development's flagship publications.
Kornel holds a Ph.D. in international economics from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, where he also worked as a teaching assistant in econometrics and macro-economics. His Ph.D. covers current issues in competition policy and international trade, including topics relating to rules of breach and remedies in the covered agreements of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Kornel is fluent in English, French and German.
