International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD)

Located in Geneva, IISD is an award-winning independent think tank accelerating solutions for a stable climate, sustainable resources, and fair economies. Its mission is to promote human development and environmental sustainability through innovative research, communication, and partnerships.

Under the Global Subsidies Initiative (GSI), IISD supports international processes, national governments, and civil society organizations to align subsidies with sustainable development. More info at: https://www.iisd.org/

IISD is deeply involved in negotiations amongst WTO Members on a new agreement that sets out disciplines on subsidies for harmful fishing activities, in accordance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As an example of our cooperation with IISD, a team of Sidley lawyers has assisted IISD with a series of analyses that have explored various legal aspects of the negotiations.

Client feedback:
“Sidley’s advice on the legal aspects of topical policy questions at the intersection of trade law and environmental concerns has added tremendous value to our own policy work. The briefs produced have been a model of clear, accurate, accessible and practical advice. This thoughtful input has helped to shape our own thinking on cutting-edge questions on which governments are currently crafting new international law.”
