Biography

AVERYN LEE focuses her practice on representing and advising clients in intellectual property matters. She has litigation experience in federal courts and before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and conducts IP due diligence in connection with M&A transactions and investments. Her work spans pre-litigation strategy, fact development and witness interviews, fact and expert discovery, technical analysis of products and patents, and drafting motions and briefs.

Averyn’s practice involves a variety of technologies, including lithium ion batteries, solar cells, carbon capture technologies, drugs and biologics, and health analysis tools. She works with scientists and experts to break down complex technological issues in ways that are accessible to diverse audiences.

Prior to joining Sidley, Averyn earned her J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, where she served as the managing executive editor of the Michigan Technology Law Review, and represented wrongfully convicted individuals as a student attorney for the Michigan Innocence Clinic. Through her participation in the project, Averyn helped exonerate two clients after 25 and 37 years in prison, and drafted an amicus brief to the Supreme Court of Michigan. Prior to joining the firm, Averyn also spent a year on a clerkship with Judge Edward M. Chen of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Averyn earned her B.S. in anatomy and cell biology with first class honors from McGill University.

Averyn also maintains an active pro bono practice in which she has provided legal assistance to veterans and immigrants.
