Biography

JOE PARAL’s practice focuses on federal income tax matters, with particular emphasis on cross-border transactions. He advises clients on the tax aspects of forming and operating private investment funds, including hedge funds, private equity funds, credit funds, and insurance-linked securities funds. Joe also represents sovereign wealth funds and other investors in structuring and negotiating investments across private investment funds, separately managed accounts, co-investments, and direct minority stakes. In addition, Joe has significant experience representing buyers, sellers, and sponsors in secondary transactions. He also frequently advises on cross-border tax considerations in the insurance services industry and counsels investors in low-income housing tax credit partnerships.

  • Athora Holding, a Bermuda-based insurance and reinsurance group providing specialty solutions to the European insurance market founded by Apollo Global Management and Athene Holding, in its formation and initial capitalization of over €2.1 billion.
  • Apollo Global Management in the acquisition of Catalina Holdings, the run-off insurance specialist.
  • Athene Holding, a leading retirement services and life insurance holding company that is sponsored by Apollo Global Management, in its US$1.24 billion initial public offering of Class A common shares listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
  • Asset managers in connection with fund formation and investment structuring matters across a variety of strategies, including with respect to commingled funds, funds of one, separately managed accounts, and management/employee vehicles.
