ANKUR SHINGAL, a former federal prosecutor, is a senior managing associate in the litigation group in the firm's Chicago office. Ankur's work focuses on white collar defense and complex commercial litigation. He has handled cases involving, among other things, breach of contract, securities fraud, various business torts, and intellectual property disputes.
Prior to joining Sidley, Ankur served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of California (San Francisco). During his time as a federal prosecutor, Ankur tried two cases, and handled numerous other court appearances, including evidentiary, suppression, and sentencing hearings. Ankur prosecuted an array of offenses involving narcotics trafficking, firearms, fraud, money laundering, child exploitation, and robbery. A number of these investigations carried a digital component, including online child exploitation, narcotics trafficking, and cryptocurrency laundering.
Before serving as an AUSA, Ankur worked as an associate at two other law firms, and served as a law clerk to the Honorable Jerome A. Holmes of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit and the Honorable Virginia M. Kendall of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

- Counsel for a former executive of a leading social media platform in testimony before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee.
- Counsel for a public company in internal and government investigations relating to management of supply chain issues.
- Counsel for major hedge fund related to FCPA, AML, and forfeiture investigation.
- Counsel for one of the seven largest banks in the U.S. in relation to inquiries and oversight hearings by the House Financial Services Committee and Senate Banking Committee.
- Non-profit Wetlands Preservation Foundation, based in Stockton, California, in litigation against the California Department of Water Resources and The Nature Conservancy concerning gross mismanagement of an integral island in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Following a ten-day bench trial, the Court issued a writ of mandate against the Department of Water Resources and held that it had failed to comply with its public trust obligations on Staten Island. Ankur's experience included briefing and arguing pretrial motions, deposing and defending numerous witnesses, preparing witnesses for trial, and serving as a key trial team member for the trial in California state court.*

- Intuitive Surgical against patent infringement allegations targeting Ethicon’s surgical staplers and endocutters used with Intuitive’s Da Vinci robotic surgical systems. Ankur's experience included briefing and arguing pretrial motions, assisting in deposition preparation for witnesses, and assisting in drafting of expert reports.*
- Counseled a major mobile gaming company related to pre-litigation trademark and copyright disputes against competitor.*

- Most recently, Ankur represented an elementary school student in an appeal of an exclusionary discipline decision. In partnership with co-counsel, Ankur was able to help the student fully reinstate without maintaining a record of expulsion.
- At a prior firm, Ankur represented and assisted in obtaining the re-sentencing and release of Clifton Jones, who had been imprisoned in California State Court for 15 years for allegedly killing his infant son. Ankur assisted in researching and drafting motions and petitions that ultimately led to Jones's release based on faulty science related to “shaken baby syndrome.”
- Drafted and filed an amici brief in front of the First Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of numerous administrative law professors in an immigration matter related to Matter of A-B-.
