JOSIE WELLAND focuses her practice on technology disputes, with particular emphasis on international civil and criminal cyber issues.
Josie is trusted by her clients to prevent and enforce a wide variety of cyber issues ranging from first-of-a-kind brand impersonation and intellectual property litigation, to computer misuse, fraud investigations, and advice on online harm. In particular, Josie has a wealth of experience in representing very large online platforms and other large technology companies, in both criminal and civil investigations, and the litigation relating to these complex issues.
Josie is also well versed in crisis management, dealing with internal investigations and various enforcement agencies such as the UK’s Serious Fraud Office, HM Revenue and Customs, and Financial Conduct Authority. She has successfully defended clients against serious accusations of financial crime, fraud, bribery, and corruption. She has also advised clients on novel and complex issues surrounding civil recovery and the proceeds of crime.
Josie is experienced in matters concerning digital assets, having participated in some of the leading civil crypto fraud and asset recovery cases before the English High Court, showcasing her ability to navigate evolving legal landscapes.
She is recommended by Legal 500 UK 2025 for regulatory investigations and corporate crime, where it states that she is a “digital fraud specialist.” In the 2020 edition, clients comment that she is “a brilliant fraud practitioner.”
Outside of her work at Sidley, Josie is the chair of the Female Fraud Forum.
