
Biography
MICHAEL ATKINSON advises on domestic and cross-border debt restructurings. Michael has experience acting for sponsors, debtors, creditors and strategic investors on the restructuring of stressed and distressed businesses.
Prior to joining Sidley, Michael trained at another international law firm in London, where he gained experience in leveraged finance, banking and insolvency litigation, structured finance, and restructuring.

Recent examples of Michael’s work include advising:
- PT Pan Brothers Tbk, the largest garment manufacturer in Indonesia, as international counsel on its approximately US$533 million debt restructuring, implemented through an Indonesian restructuring plan.
- GLAS Agency (Hong Kong) Limited as trustee in connection with New World Development’s exchange offer, which resulted in the exchange of approximately US$2.53 billion of existing securities for around US$1.36 billion of new securities.
- Sunac China Holdings Limited on the restructuring of its approximately US$9.6 billion in offshore debt.
- A leading global producer of chemicals in relation to the consensual restructuring of its €1.1bn financial indebtedness and €75m equivalent super senior new money raise.
- An ad hoc group of noteholders on the €830m restructuring of a leading European fashion quality discounter, including a debt for equity swap via a high yield consent solicitation.
- Credit Suisse on its exposure to Greensill Capital.
