MARKETA LINDT leads the firm’s Immigration practice. She advises U.S. and multinational employers on the strategy, design, and management of business immigration programs that help them recruit and retain global talent. She combines practical, compliant solutions with an employee experience that reflects well on the organization.

Clients turn to Marketa when immigration and business strategy intersect, including when they are expanding their workforces, launching U.S. operations, restructuring, implementing reductions in force, or completing acquisitions. Working with colleagues in Sidley’s corporate, tax, employment, and compliance practices, she helps management teams anticipate how policy developments, processing realities, and enforcement trends may affect their people and business plans. She is known for her practical judgment and ability to identify lawful, creative solutions within a complex regulatory system.

Marketa and her team represent multinational corporations, publicly traded and privately held U.S. companies, private equity sponsors and their portfolio companies, high-growth startups, universities, and healthcare institutions. She also advises high-net-worth individuals on investment-based immigration, including EB-5 matters, as well as sensitive personal, family, and reputational matters.

Marketa also leads Sidley’s I-9 compliance practice. She counsels employers on hiring practices, E-Verify, and workforce compliance; conducts immigration-related internal investigations; and defends companies in civil and criminal worksite enforcement actions. She also leads immigration and I-9 due diligence in mergers, acquisitions, and other corporate transactions. In high-stakes matters, she provides measured, discreet, and experienced counsel.

Thought Leadership

A past national president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), Marketa has spent her career advocating for an immigration system that works for U.S. employers and the economy they power. As AILA president, she testified before the House Judiciary Immigration Subcommittee on business immigration processing delays and founded AILA’s litigation department. She serves on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce immigration policy committee, and in 2024 served on AILA’s comment-writing team for the H-1B modernization rulemaking, one of the most consequential regulatory changes in modern business immigration. When policy shifts, clients benefit from a lawyer who has been in the rooms where it is debated.

Marketa is a primary author of the treatise Business Immigration Law, an editor of Kurzban’s Immigration Law Sourcebook, and a contributor to AILA’s Guide to Worksite Enforcement and Compliance, Guide to PERM Labor Certification, and numerous editions of the Immigration & Nationality Law Handbook. A frequent national speaker, she is regularly called on by television, radio, and print media to explain developments in immigration law.

Pro Bono

Marketa has served for many years on the Leadership Board of the National Immigrant Justice Center, where she helped build its pro bono partnership with Sidley. As AILA president in 2020, she led a delegation to the southern border to document conditions in the tent courts in Brownsville, Texas, and the refugee camp in Matamoros, Mexico. She is a board member of Hephzibah House, a therapeutic residential treatment home in Oak Park, Illinois for young children who have suffered abuse or neglect. She also advises Chicago-area cultural institutions and organizations serving underserved immigrant communities.
