March 16, 2026
The St. John’s University School of Law Center for Bankruptcy Studies featured a Q&A with Tom Califano, a partner in Sidley’s New York office, in their March Bankruptcy Alumni Spotlight. The Center for Bankruptcy Studies is home to all of the Law School’s bankruptcy initiatives, including the nation’s leading Bankruptcy LL.M. program, the American Bankruptcy Institute Law Review, the Bankruptcy Law Society, and the Bankruptcy Fellowship Program.
When asked about which part of restructuring work he finds most rewarding, Tom said, “fixing problems that have a human impact.” He explained that, with regard to healthcare matters, “you’re trying to keep the facilities open, sustain a business, and preserve jobs. It goes beyond dollars, cents, and creditors and impacts actual lives.”
Tom represents large private and public companies in distress, buyers of distressed companies, and significant creditor constituencies. His practice focuses on company and buy-side representations across various industries, including healthcare, energy, and financial services.
