Sidley counsel Adam Raviv, co-leader of the firm’s Automotive and Mobility practice, will speak at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Automated Transportation Symposium 2026 taking place July 27–30 in San Diego. This event brings together leaders from the automotive industry, government, and academia to address technical, regulatory, and policy challenges associated with autonomous vehicles. Adam is speaking on three panels, which include:

“The Forensic Collision Lab: Deconstructing the “Swiss Cheese” Failure?”

  • Monday, July 27 at 1:30 P.T.
  • This interactive session will conduct a live root cause analysis of a Level 4 autonomous vehicle collision, revealing how catastrophic failures emerge from the alignment of gaps across the entire safety ecosystem rather than any single error.

“FMVSS 600: Designing Regulations Specific for Automated Driving Systems.”

  • Tuesday, July, 28 at 1:30 P.T.
  • This panel explores how to move from adapting existing federal safety standards to codifying new ones purpose-built for Automated Driving Systems, using the concept of a hypothetical FMVSS 600 Series as a framework for hands-on discussion of what aspects of ADS can and should be formally regulated.

“Connecting the Country: Preparing for Interstate AV Trucking and Freight”

  • Wednesday, July 29 at 1:30 P.T.
  • This panel examines the present and near-future deployment of autonomous trucking across urban and rural environments, covering the economic drivers and barriers to scaling, community impacts, and hot-button operational challenges including remote operations, truck parking, and cross-border considerations.
