Sidley is representing GR Energy and its family of companies, including Wellmatics, a wireline tool designer and producer, in a patent lawsuit in the Southern District of Texas brought by a competitor, Canatex Completions Solutions. Canatex alleges a Wellmatics tool infringes a Canatex patent relating to releasing downhole oil and gas wireline perforation tools.
Claim construction was argued on September 26, 2023, where the Sidley team argued that every claim of the patent is invalid as indefinite due to an irreconcilable error that exists in every claim. The court issued its claim construction ruling on December 14, 2023, finding that all the claims of the patent are indefinite, and in turn the patent is invalid.
This is the second major victory in the case for GR Energy. Previously, Sidley defeated a request for a preliminary injunction which would have severely impacted Wellmatics and GR Energy’s business operations.
The Sidley team is led by Aimee Fagan and Phillip Aurentz, and supported by Andrew Langford, Morgan Mendicino, and Amanda Steger.
