Biography

ELLIE DEGARMO focuses her practice on healthcare regulatory, compliance, and transactional matters.

Prior to joining Sidley, Ellie was a graduate student in a joint J.D./M.P.H. degree program at Georgetown University Law Center and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. While attending Georgetown, she was a student attorney in the Health Justice Alliance Law Clinic, a senior editor of the Georgetown Journal on Poverty Law and Policy, and treasurer of the Health Law Society. At Johns Hopkins, Ellie received the M.P.H. COVID-Related Capstone Award of Distinction for Outstanding Achievement for her capstone.

Ellie had several internships during her time in graduate school, including positions as a law clerk for the Health Team on the Committee on Finance in the United States Senate, a legal intern in the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, a policy intern at the Maryland Office of the Public Defender, a research fellow at FreeState Justice, and an intern at Community Legal Services.

Ellie graduated cum laude from Princeton University with a bachelor’s degree in public and international affairs. She also received a Certificate in Global Health and Health Policy. While attending Princeton, Ellie was a U.S. Health Policy Scholar and a peer health adviser.

Community Involvement

Pro Bono

Prior to joining the firm, Ellie served as a pro bono fellow at the ACLU of DC, where she worked on various civil rights issues, including procedural due process, free speech, and incarcerated individuals’ rights. Since joining the firm, Ellie has worked on several pro bono matters, including drafting a comment letter for a large patient advocacy non-profit organization, appealing the denial of an application for Social Security disability benefits, and helping with the affirmative asylum application for a parent and child who were separated at the U.S.-Mexico border.
