Biography
ALEX HARPER advises on a wide range of EU and UK competition law issues, including merger control, abuse of dominance, cartels, compliance, and market investigations.
Alex trained and qualified as a solicitor in Sidley’s London office, where he also gained experience in the firm’s leveraged finance, M&A and private equity, and investment funds practices.

Recent examples of Alex's work include representing:
- Darling Ingredients Inc. in its potential joint venture with Tessenderlo Group to form a new wellness company.
- Welltower Inc, a leading real estate investment trust, on multiple UK investments, including the CMA’s investigation of Welltower’s 2025 acquisitions of care homes operated by Barchester, Aria, Danforth, and HC-One.
- RenaissanceRe Holdings Limited, a global provider of reinsurance and insurance, in its acquisition of Validus Re Limited from American International Group for US$2.985 billion.
- Allkem Limited, a global lithium extractor, in its US$10.6B merger of equals with NYSE-listed Livent Corporation.
Community Involvement
Pro Bono
Alex has worked on a range of pro bono efforts including Personal Independence Payment appeals, the Lifescape Project, and Kids in Need of Defense. In 2023, he received the Sidley London “Outstanding Contribution to Pro Bono” award.
