How Sovereign Can Europe Afford to Be?

Sidley and the Centre of European Law, King’s College London are delighted to invite you to the second edition of Brussels Dialogues, a new series designed to spark candid, high-level conversations on how law and policy intersect at the core of the European Union.

Sovereignty has become the defining ambition of this European Commission. Two years after Enrico Letta’s report to the European Council, “Much More Than a Market,” called for a more self-reliant single market, that ambition is being tested in real time, in defence, energy security, critical raw materials, and the regulation of AI and digital infrastructure alike. Each raises the same question in a different guise: how far can the EU go in building strategic autonomy before it undermines the open trade relationships its economy still depends on.
