On Friday, March 20, in Notice 2020-18, the U.S. Treasury Department announced that the due date for filing all federal income tax returns, and making all federal income tax payments, otherwise due on April 15, 2020, has been automatically extended until July 15, 2020.
Notice 2020-18 restates, expands and supersedes Notice 2020-17, which extended the deadline for making federal income tax payments otherwise due on April 15, 2020, subject to caps that varied by taxpayer type but not the deadline for filing income tax returns.
Notice 2020-18 (i) extends the deadline for filing income tax returns otherwise due on April 15 until July 15, 2020, and (ii) eliminates the cap on income tax payments that can be deferred. Similar to the relief provided in Notice 2020-17, the extensions provided in Notice 2020-18 are limited to income tax payments (including payments of tax on self-employment income), income tax returns and estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2020; no extension is provided for a filing, payment or deposit relating to any other type of tax or for the filing of any federal information return.
