Medical Devices: Switzerland as a “Third Country”

June 3, 2021
Switzerland not only shares all its borders with Member States of the European Union, but 1.4 million EU citizens reside in Switzerland (16% of the entire Swiss population), and a workforce of further 350,000 EU citizens commute to Switzerland on a daily basis. Vice versa, 450,000 Swiss citizens live in an EU Member State (with no official statistical data regarding the number of Swiss citizens commuting to EU Member States).

The movement of people between the EU and Switzerland is important. However, equally important is the fact that the EU is Switzerland’s biggest economic trading partner by far: 57% of Swiss imports stem from the EU, and 48% of Swiss exports are destined for the EU. More than 120 bilateral treaties between the two parties form the legal basis for this cross-border exchange in goods amount to around CHF300 billion (€270 billion) per year.
