Sidley Continues Global Finance Growth With Partners Brian Foster and Patrick Calves in New York

August 4, 2026

New York – Sidley is pleased to announce that Brian Foster and Patrick Calves have joined Sidley’s office in New York as partners in the firm’s Global Finance practice. They join from Hogan Lovells Cadwalader, where Mr. Foster previously served as the Co-Head of the Fund Finance practice. The team will include three counsel, Bryan Barreras, Brian Kurpis, and Susan Bumgardner, and they will be joined by six additional associates.

The additions strengthen the firm’s well-established fund finance practice. Mr. Foster and Mr. Calves bring with them a market leading practice and combined more than three decades of experience in fund finance with comprehensive capabilities across all fund finance products and asset classes.

Mr. Foster’s cross-border practice focuses on complex financings, including fund finance, derivatives, and structured products transactions involving financial institutions and investment funds. His experience spans equity- and fund-linked derivatives and a wide range of fund financing arrangements, including secondaries financings, NAV facilities, portfolio back leverage transactions, subscription lines, margin loans, preferred share issuances, management fee lines, and collateralized fund obligations. Earlier in his career, Mr. Foster worked in the Global Fund Derivatives group at Deutsche Bank and at Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. in connection with the unwinding of its derivatives book. He is ranked in Chambers USA and Chambers Global for Capital Markets: Structured Products and has been repeatedly recognized by Legal 500 as a leading lawyer in derivatives and structured products.

Mr. Calves represents clients on a broad range of bilateral and syndicated financing structures, including NAV facilities, subscription, and hybrid facilities, margin loans, and prime brokerage and other trading and financing arrangements, with particular experience in asset based financings to private equity and private credit funds, funds of funds, family offices and registered investment companies. He also counsels financial institutions and buy-side market participants on securities and derivatives regulatory matters, including swap regulation under Title VII of the Dodd-Frank Act, and on the structuring and documentation of complex derivatives transactions. Mr. Calves has been recognized as a “Rising Star” by IFLR1000.

“Private capital is reshaping global finance, and client demand for sophisticated counsel in fund finance, derivatives, and structured products has never been greater. Brian and Patrick's arrival is a deliberate step in our multi-year build-out of a Global Finance platform with premier sponsor-side and lender-side finance capabilities,” said Yvette Ostolaza, Chair of Sidley’s Management Committee. “Brian and Patrick have worked closely with our partners Leah Edelboim, Bonnie Neuman, Melissa Hinkle, Molly Lovedale, and Nick Brandfon with two counsel and nearly 20 associates from their previous firm, and we are delighted to welcome Brian and Patrick to the firm and look forward to the many ways they will contribute to our clients' success and the continued growth of our global platform.”

“Our New York office has welcomed more than 70 partners through lateral hiring and partner promotions since the beginning of 2024 — growth that has been intentional, practice by practice, anticipating where our clients’ needs are heading,” said Nancy Chung, managing partner of the New York office and a member of the firm’s Management Committee and Executive Committee. “Brian and Patrick exemplify that strategy, strengthening the depth of our Global Finance platform while bringing sophisticated practices, longstanding client relationships across the financial institutions market, and a collaborative approach that makes them an excellent fit for Sidley and our culture.”

The arrival of Mr. Foster and Mr. Calves follows Sidley’s addition of 40 Global Finance partners through lateral hires and internal promotions in the last three years, including Rob Hagan, Becky O’Brien, and Katarina Molnarova in Washington D.C.; Lee Askenazi, Alistair Dunlop, Sumita Ahuja, Jeff Ross, Leah Edelboim, Ji Hye You, Marissa Gluck, and Christopher Jackson in New York; Evan Palenschat in Chicago; Jeremy Trinder, Tania Bedi, Sam Hamilton, Joseph Kimberling, Fergus O’Domhnaill, Jayanthi Sadanandan, Ben Thompson, and Ben Wright in London; Parker Zangoei in San Diego; and Ike Chidi and Peter Burke in Century City.
