Sidley Deal-Maker Sean Carney Relocates to London to Support Continued Growth of Cross-Border Work

London – Sidley is pleased to announce that Sean Carney, a global co-leader of the firm’s Private Equity and Insurance practices, and member of the Executive Committee, has relocated to London to support the continued growth of its cross-border work. Sean has worked at the firm his entire career, having started in the firm’s Chicago office in 2002.

Sean’s international cross-border practice focuses on a variety of corporate, securities, and regulatory matters, including cross-border mergers and acquisitions, dispositions, capital raising, governance, corporate reorganizations, and venture capital/private equity investments. Sean regularly represents regulated financial institutions, including life and non-life insurance companies, private equity sponsors, and other private capital investors and asset managers, as well as their portfolio companies, in connection with these and other matters, including leveraged buyouts, take-privates, carveouts, initial public offerings, private offerings, distressed investments, and other special situations.

“I have worked with Sean for more than two decades. He has made a significant contribution to the firm’s cross-border Private Equity and Insurance practices and has advised some of the firm’s most important clients on some of their most important matters,” said Brian Fahrney, chair of Sidley’s Executive Committee. “At a time when demand for sophisticated advice on high-profile and complex cross-border matters continues to grow, adding senior deal-makers in London — with strong client relationships and connectivity to our global platform — enhances our ability to support clients at the highest level across the firm.”

“Our London office continues to add leaders at the top end of the market supporting the growth of our business. Strengthening our bench from within is a core part of our growth strategy,” said Tom Thesing, managing partner of the London office and member of both the Management and Executive committees. “Our clients continue to see London as a core hub for growth, and Sean’s move to be based in London will unlock further opportunities for clients and colleagues alike.”

Sidley has seen the transformational growth of its London platform by adding a significant number of private capital leaders in recent years, including Ed Gander, David Stewart, Jay Sadanandan, and Sam Hamilton (joined by Fergus O’Domhnaill, Joe Kimberling, Ben Wright, and Tania Bedi, as well as high yield partners Scott Colwell and Patrick Kwak), James MacArthur, and Ramy Wahbeh. Likewise during this period, the firm has promoted eight lawyers to the partnership in the London office, including three new partners effective January 1 of this year, and has also continued its more than decade-long year-on-year revenue growth.
